A four-year-old child has died after being found unresponsive in a neighbour's backyard pool in Ottawa's east end, Ottawa Police Service said.

Emergency crews were called to a residence in the area of Bathgate Drive and Matheson Road at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, according to an Ottawa Police Service media release issued Thursday.

Police said the child was found in a backyard pool on a neighbouring property. Despite life-saving efforts, the child died.

No indication of suspicious circumstances

A preliminary investigation has found no indication of suspicious circumstances, police said.

Investigators will continue to review the circumstances surrounding the death, including how the child was able to access the neighbouring property.

Our heartfelt condolences are with the child's family and loved ones, as well as the neighbours and first responders affected by this tragic loss.

That statement came from the police release issued Thursday afternoon.

Details withheld to protect family's privacy

Police said further identifying details will not be released in order to protect the family's privacy, including the child's gender and the specific street name.

The force noted that members of the public can view, download and interact with data it releases through its Community Safety Data portal at data.ottawapolice.ca.

Police also encouraged residents to register their information and security camera locations at CAMSafe.ca to support investigations and help make communities safer.
