A 60-year-old man is dead after a vehicle struck him on Strandherd Drive early Wednesday morning, and Ottawa police are appealing to anyone who saw the collision to come forward.

Emergency crews responded to the scene near Cresthaven Drive at approximately 6:19 a.m. on Oct. 14, according to the Ottawa Police Service. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released the victim's name. In its release, the service said it does not identify victims out of respect for privacy unless a family asks for the information to be shared.

Investigators seek video evidence

The service's Fatal Collision Investigation Unit is handling the case and is asking witnesses — as well as anyone whose dashcam or home security camera may have captured the collision — to get in touch.

"Even information that may seem minor could assist the investigation," the Ottawa Police Service said in its release.

Anyone with information can call the Fatal Collision Investigation Unit directly at 613-236-1222, extension 2345.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers, either toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at crimestoppers.ca.

CAMSafe registration

Police also reminded residents of CAMSafe.ca, a program that lets people register their security camera locations to help investigators. Registered camera information is not a live feed, the service notes — it simply tells officers where footage may exist after an incident so they can ask the owner directly for help.

The service also points members of the public to its Community Safety Data portal at data.ottawapolice.ca, where data released by the police service can be viewed, downloaded and explored.

Strandherd Drive is a busy arterial road through Ottawa's south end, serving the Barrhaven area and lined with homes, schools and shopping plazas. The collision occurred in the early-morning darkness, before many commutes had begun.

No further details about the driver, the vehicle involved or possible charges have been released. Anyone who travelled through the Strandherd Drive and Cresthaven Drive area around 6:19 a.m. Wednesday is encouraged to check their dashcam footage and contact police.
