Ottawa Community Housing is breaking ground on a new affordable housing development in Lowertown, adding 159 homes to the downtown core.
The project at 200 Beausoleil Drive will rise 20 storeys and deliver 159 affordable homes, including 32 accessible units, according to an Ottawa Community Housing media advisory issued Monday.
The city's largest landlord said it will mark the start of construction with a ceremonial groundbreaking alongside government, community and development partners on the site in Lowertown.
What the development will include
Of the 159 homes planned for the building, 32 will be accessible, a portion the organization says reflects its commitment to homes that work for residents with disabilities.
The 20-storey tower would add substantial density to a neighbourhood steps from the ByWard Market and Rideau Street, where demand for affordable units has long outpaced supply.
In its advisory, Ottawa Community Housing said the development will help increase the city's stock of affordable housing while contributing to what it describes as a sustainable and inclusive community in downtown Ottawa.
The organization manages thousands of rental homes across the city and has partnered with other levels of government on previous affordable housing builds.
The groundbreaking ceremony brings together representatives from government, the community and the development team involved in the project.
Further details about the project's timeline, unit mix and tenant selection process are expected as construction moves ahead.
