The Ottawa Senators’ home opener, concerts at the National Arts Centre and free performances on Sparks Street are among Ottawa’s Oct. 8 events, according to The Ottawan's Oct. 8 listings.
The Senators face the Philadelphia Flyers at Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata. Downtown, violinist Kerson Leong performs music by Beethoven, Britten and Bach at the National Arts Centre.
The NAC also hosts Winnipeg singer-songwriter Begonia, known offstage as Alexa Dirks, for a one-night appearance. Begonia has been long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize.
Capital Music Week continues
Capital Music Week’s schedule includes the second day of the Canada After Dark conference, along with performances, film screenings and an exhibition opening at venues across Ottawa.
Songs from the Shed offers free music performances on Sparks Street. The Yall Music Documentary Film Fest has screenings at Next Door, while Tyler Shaw and guests perform at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa.
Art House hosts a free opening reception for the Portraits of a Music City exhibition. At Gridwrks, Ottawa DJ groups present a free event featuring a range of programming styles.
Elsewhere in the music lineup, Mike Essoudry, Steve Boudreau and John Geggie perform jazz and improvisation at the Robo Lounge in the Glebe. Doghouse Rose, Splintered Fate and the Fly Downs are listed at the Dominion Tavern.
Local history and cinema
For residents interested in Ottawa’s history, Nepean Museum’s Curiosity Café: Community Connections lecture explores Hintonburg’s past and its part in the city’s development.
The session runs from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Eastern, with registration available at the door.
