Ottawa police laid 65 charges during targeted traffic enforcement on Friday and Saturday evenings, including five stunt driving incidents — one involving a driver travelling 135 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
The Ottawa Police Service said its Road Safety Unit and Impounded Vehicle Section carried out the enforcement action, which resulted in 55 Provincial Offence Notices and 10 Part III summonses requiring a mandatory court appearance. Speeding accounted for the majority of the infractions.
Stunt driving carries immediate penalties
Drivers charged with stunt driving face an immediate 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment, according to the police service. Significant fines and additional penalties can follow upon conviction.
Police warned that excessive speed dramatically raises the odds of serious injury or death in a collision, because it leaves drivers with less time to react to changing road conditions, unexpected hazards or other road users.
A few seconds saved are never worth someone's life.
The police service said it will continue to prioritize enforcement aimed at speeding, stunt driving, distracted driving and other dangerous behaviours that put people at risk. Drivers are being urged to slow down, obey posted speed limits, stay attentive and share the road responsibly.
Where to find the data
Members of the public can view, download and interact with data released by the Ottawa Police Service through the Community Safety Data portal at data.ottawapolice.ca, the service said.
Police are also encouraging residents to register their information and security camera locations at CAMSafe.ca, a program that lets investigators know where potential footage exists to support investigations in the area.
