Ottawa police wrapped up a three-day traffic enforcement blitz in the city's south district this month, issuing 55 provincial offence notices and 16 court summonses.
The operation ran from Oct. 15 to 17 and was carried out by the Ottawa Police Service South District Traffic Team, according to an Ottawa Police Service news release published Wednesday.
Officers focused on areas where residents have raised ongoing traffic complaints, with particular attention paid to east-west corridors where recent fatal collisions have occurred.
Repeat offender stopped again
Among the enforcement highlights, police stopped a driver for the second time in six weeks for driving while suspended and without insurance. That driver now faces roughly $12,000 in potential fines.
The 16 Part III summonses issued during the blitz require drivers to appear in court, a step beyond the standard provincial offence notices handed to the remaining motorists.
Range of violations
Police said the charges covered a variety of unsafe and improper driving behaviours. Those included unaccompanied G1 driving, improper use of licence plates, driving in a bus lane and vehicle equipment violations.
The blitz is part of what police describe as a continued commitment to proactive traffic enforcement across Ottawa, with a focus on high-risk driving behaviours and locations flagged through community concerns.
"Road safety is everyone's responsibility," the release stated.
How residents can help
Police are encouraging residents to get involved in local road safety efforts. Through the Community Safety Data portal at data.ottawapolice.ca, members of the public can view, download and interact with data released by the police service.
Residents can also register their information and security camera locations at CAMSafe.ca to support police investigations.
